Battalion S-3: Operations

c/MAJ Edleen Fernandez

Hello everyone! I am Cadet Major Edleen Fernandez, and I will be the Operations and Training officer or which is also known as the S3 for the upcoming school year of 2025-2026. My duties and responsibilities as an S3 officer include creating permission slips for each event, creating OPORDs, and keeping track of all events on JUMS. Outside of JROTC, I am a BST Ambassador. I help out with middle school tours and events like BST Day!!! I also play badminton as a hobby nowadays but I used to compete in tournaments back in Asia.

JROTC Career

In all honesty, I actually didn’t choose JROTC as a class in my freshman year; my counselor decided to put me in one of their classes since P.E. was already full at that moment. However, as I spent more time within the JROTC community, I developed a sense of support and motivation from the wonderful Staff and Army Instructors, which actually became my reason to stay in the program. Before I became S3, I started as an S4 assistant in my freshman year. My duty usually included helping out in issuing uniforms to all the cadets in my class period. Then in my sophomore year, I was soon promoted to S1 for an entire semester and then promoted to S3 at the end of the school year. Throughout my freshman year, three of my friends and I decided to form a robotics team under JROTC. I am the first sergeant and notebooker of the team! We were actually the first JROTC Robotics team that was ever created within the district! We’ve competed in 2 National Competitions so far and have gotten 2 awards!!!

Academics

I studied kindergarten, elementary, and middle school back in Asia. Throughout those years of my life, I’ve studied at a Catholic school named Dominican School. I was very active in journalism when I was in elementary school; I would even compete against different schools within our province. I was an incoming 8th grader when I moved to the US. My 8th grade year was the most memorable moment in my life since I was able to take classes that I actually enjoyed and I was also recognized for my academic achievements. I am now an incoming 11th grader here at Kearny High School under Biomedical Science and Technology!
