Battalion Commander
c/LTC Calvin McKewan
My name is c/LTC Calvin McKewan, and I have the honor of serving as the Battalion Commander of the Komet Battalion and Regulation Team Commander. I am currently a Senior in Kearny High School’s EID small school, and I am deeply involved both on and off campus. Alongside my JROTC leadership, I am active in my church providing leadership to youth and serving as a senior altar server, working toward my Eagle Scout rank in Troop 260 SD, and participating in multiple campus organizations including Teens Make Health Happen, Zero Waste Club, EID Ambassadors, and Cross Country. I have dedicated nearly 1,000 hours of community service, ranging from church volunteering to independent beach cleanups to JROTC community events. For the past three years, I have also served as a staff instructor for the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) program, teaching youth how to become more effective and ethical leaders. My passion for leadership stems from a simple but profound motivation — I love helping others. I find genuine joy in uplifting people, guiding them toward their goals, and teaching them to become stronger, kinder, and more capable individuals. With a strong moral compass, I am committed to putting in the work needed to serve others and lead with integrity.

JROTC Career
My JROTC journey began before my first day of high school. Two weeks before freshman year, during Summer Bridge, my former Senior Army Instructor spoke about a “magical program” that replaced PE — and offered the comfort of air conditioning. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a commitment that has shaped my high school career. I was appointed Squad Leader after my first week in the program. Soon after, I attended after-school Basic Training and was promoted to Company First Sergeant, leading Charlie Company alongside my good friend Maddilyn Holt. Together, we built two platoons and worked hard for the rest of the year to improve company performance. Near the end of freshman year, I was encouraged to apply for staff and promoted to Captain, serving as Kearny’s very first S-6 Officer. In this role, I created a brand-new battalion website from scratch, laying a foundation for future digital operations. As my sophomore year closed, I was selected to serve as the Battalion Executive Officer (XO) for my junior year, acting as second-in-command. Midway through that year, I was promoted on short notice to Battalion Commander, the highest-ranking cadet position in the Komet Battalion, where I continue to serve today. Throughout my JROTC career, I have earned numerous awards, including the Medal of the Daedalian, the Purple Heart Award, and multiple commendations for Excellent Staff Performance. More importantly, JROTC has taught me invaluable skills — servant leadership, effective communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and discipline — which I carry into every aspect of my life
Academics
I am currently on track to graduate early from Kearny EID in the winter, with over 70 credits completed. I maintain a strong academic standing and take pride in my consistent effort to excel in every subject. My favorite classes have been Math, Engineering, and English, thanks to the exceptional teachers who have inspired me to think critically and creatively. Beyond the classroom, I actively participate in several student organizations, including Teens Make Health Happen, Zero Waste Club, EID Ambassadors, Speech and Debate, Track and Field, and Cross Country. These groups have broadened my perspective, challenged me to collaborate with diverse teams, and deepened my commitment to making a positive difference in my community. After graduation, I plan to pursue a STEM-related degree, applying to universities such as SDSU, UCSD, USD, and others. My academic journey is driven by my desire to solve problems, innovate, and continue developing as a servant leader.
Goals
This year, as Battalion Commander, my primary goal is to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that draws in students from all walks of life, rebuilding the strong sense of family that first inspired me to join the program. I am also working to create a continuity plan that ensures the Komet Battalion thrives for years to come — establishing systems, rules, and traditions that will serve as a solid foundation for future cadets. On a personal level, I want to empower my fellow cadets to embrace servant leadership — leading by example, prioritizing the needs of the team, and developing the skills to lead with empathy and effectiveness. My hope is that every cadet leaves this program not only as a stronger leader, but also as a better person.
